Tobacco Cards

Tobacco cards are trade cards originally issued by tobacco manufacturers to stiffen cigarette packaging and to advertise their cigarette brands.

Since tobacco cards were first produced in 1875 by Allen and Ginter Tobacco Company, many others followed suit, first in the U.S and then in the U.K. 

Each set of cards typically consisted of 25 or 50 related subjects covering a variety of themes including sports, nature, military heroes, historical themes and the like.

Some very early tobacco cards were printed on silk which was then attached to a paper backing.  This was discontinued during World War II to save paper.

Indiviual tobacco cards and sets of cards are very collectible today whether for the money value or for simply the pleasure of it.
